Eggs for training and recovery

Eggs provide high-quality protein, but performance depends on adequate total food, carbohydrate, hydration and training as well.

The useful answer

Use eggs as a convenient protein component, not a special performance food. Two large eggs provide about 12.8g protein, so a recovery meal often needs additional food.

Daily total comes first

Protein needs vary with body size, training type, energy intake and goals. Distribution across meals can help, but a perfectly timed egg is less important than meeting needs consistently.

Build a complete recovery meal

Eggs supply amino acids; carbohydrate restores fuel used during harder training. Add bread, potatoes, rice, oats or fruit according to the session and your overall plan.

Whole egg or white

Whites add protein with little fat; yolks provide much of the choline and micronutrients. There is rarely a reason for an all-or-nothing rule.

Do not under-fuel

Replacing substantial meals with eggs alone can leave active people short of energy, carbohydrate, fibre and dietary variety.

When general guidance is not enough

Personal circumstances change the answer.

Competitive athletes, adolescents, people changing weight rapidly and anyone with disordered-eating concerns should use a qualified sports dietitian rather than a generic protein formula.
